A small, community – based NGO researching into plant and rice cultivation. Also works to educate the local people to prevent exploitation of them and their resources.
Nan Province, Northern Thailand, near the border with Laos. 15km from Naan city, which has direct flights to Bangkok.
Number of volunteers required?
One or two.
Other requirements?
Flexibility: a willingness to undertake different tasks as required (see below). Willingness to be part of a small, intimate community. Nearest other volunteers may be 20km away at least. An interest in biology, ecology, plant science and / or research skills would be useful. Must be prepared for extensive travel in the region.
A chance to be part of a team that has won awards for its research and work with local farmers. Thai language lessons may be available. A chance to absorb oneself quite fully in Thai rural culture. Chances to visit other villages and towns in the region with the project director and his colleagues. A chance to experience a way of life quite distinct from the usual frenetic pace of life in the ‘developed’ world or big Thai cities.

Three months but longer prefered.
Volunteer tasks?
Research assitance; accompanying the director and his colleagues to other centres; teaching English in local schools; teaching basic English and Maths to local farmers and villagers; assisting with planting, cataloguing and harvesting of rice strains and other plants. Other possible tasks as requested / required.
This NGO works to preserve local plants. It is run by Mr. Samruay Padpon, who also led the Love Naan City organization. It carries out research into plant and rice strains to maximize yields and sustainability. This also involves education for local farmers and growers. It aims to prevent patent and sales monopolization by large multinationals.
